Built for the Universal Exhibition, the Petit Palais, Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris houses a varied collection of selected works from Antiquity to the 20th century in a 1900s Palais in the heart of Paris, close to the Champs-Elysées, Place de la Concorde and the Invalides esplanade.
Considered to be one of the jewels of the Universal Exhibition, the Petit Palais is a brilliant example of the splendour of the Belle Époque. The façade is almost 150 m long, decorated in bas-relief and punctuated by colonnades. It is centred on a monumental porch with a gilded wrought-iron gate, the museum's symbol of recognition.
Inside, painted decorations, mosaics, stained-glass windows, ironwork and the cupolas of the rotunda staircase all contribute to making this place unique. The south gallery, with its 750 m2 of wide windows, offers views of the surrounding area. An interior garden completes the architectural ensemble. The garden's peristyle reinvents the art of fresco in a vast décor of gilded garlands and trellises, punctuated by medallions depicting the seasons. This décor echoes two mosaic basins in which the museum's dome is reflected.
