Émile Grittel (1870-1953) was a sculptor by training, who turned to ceramics on the instigation of his friend and interior designer and collector Georges Hoentschel. It was through the latter that Grittel met Jean Carriès (1855-1894), a few years before the death of the artist who had abandoned sculpture to devote himself to ceramic art in Puisaye.

It was probably on the death of Carriès in 1894 that Émile Grittel produced this posthumous portrait of the sculptor. The wax from the Fabius collection acted as a model for the portrait of Carriès in glazed stoneware, conserved in the collections in the Musée d’Orsay.

Presented in an old wooden display case covered with red velvet on the inside, the wax is in a very good state of conservation. Grittel was no doubt inspired by Jean Carriès' self-portrait, on display in the collections of the Petit Palais.

This work complements the collection of portraits depicting Carriès, such as the Portrait of Jean Carriès in his studio by Louise Breslau and the Portrait of Jean Carriès by Charles Giron.
