Pomona is one of the major works of Aristide Maillol. He presented an initial model of this piece in 1910 at the Salon d'Automne.

The work received considerable attention, and was then commissioned in bronze by the Russian collector Ivan Morosov to decorate his Moscow palace, alongside décor by Maurice Denis on the theme of the Story of Psyche

In the course of his career, Maillol would return to the model of Pomona to produce different versions, nude or draped.

The marble in the Petit Palais was commissioned from Maillol by the City of Paris for the International Exposition of 1937.
