Commissioned by the Marquis de Marigny, director of the King's Buildings, for his sister, Madame de Pompadour, this painting hung in the private apartments of the king's favourite as one of a pair, with Simplicity (Kimbell Art Museum) which depicted a young girl pulling the petals off a daisy. This bucolic, naïve figure reflects the cult of Nature and feeling that spread in the 18th century.

Encargo del marqués de Marigny, director general de los Edificios del rey, para su hermana, la marquesa de Pompadour, este lienzo decoraba el apartamento de la favorita del rey junto con otro que lo completa, Sencillez (Kimbell Art Museum), que muestra una joven arrancando los pétalos de una margarita. Esta figura bucólica e ingenua refleja el culto por la Naturaleza y las emociones, desarrollado en el siglo XVIII.
