The ciborium is a reproduction of an item created by Poussielgue-Rusand for the consecration of the Bishop of Moulins, the Marquis of Dreux-Brézé, in 1850.
The original ciborium, which is preserved in the treasure house of Moulins cathedral, formed part of an altar set comprising a chalice, paten, two cruets and a tray. The set was exhibited at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851 and was very well received.
Poussielgue-Rusand drew his inspiration from a variety of mediaeval sources, whilst using new manufacturing techniques which were faster to implement.
