This icon illustrates one of the many hymns to the glory of Mary, and is written in the 8th century by St John Damascene and sung during the celebration of the liturgy of St Basil: “In you rejoices all creation, the angelic hosts and mankind”.

The medallions evoke “all creation”, referring back to the beginning of the Bible which describes the creation of the world by God. This work is signed and dated.
