This large painting, which was displayed at the 1922 Autumn Salon under the title Le Bouquet, incorporates three genres (landscape, portrait and still life) which Vallotton was particularly fond of in the later years of his life. This painting demonstrates his great mastery of them.

The landscape, framed on the left, can be identified as Le Chemineau Tournedos, which was painted by the artist in the same year (private collection). The painter painted this studio model, recognisable by her hooked nose, on several occasions. Here the woman, whose identity remains unknown, is busy arranging a sumptuous vase of flowers.

The radiant colours, the masterly skills in the treatment of the bouquet, and the light on the ribbed velvet housecoat, make this work an example of painting in its purest form.
