On the advice of his master Valenciennnes, Chauvin travelled to Italy to paint studies in oil in the open air from which he produced harmonious reconstituted landscapes back in his studio.
In approximately 1801, he shared accommodation with Granet in the former Capucin convent in Paris and met up with his friend again in Rome where he settled permanently in 1804.This “historic landscape” in the traditional mould, with its layering of backgrounds and fine atmospheric effects of perspective on the Alban hills, is peopled by three knights in the troubadour style initiated by Ingres, a friend of Chauvin in Rome.
The craggy site depicted is located close to Frascati: the pines and cyprus trees in the foreground belong to the Villa Rufinella, one of the residences of Lucien Bonaparte, and the Villa Mondragone is visible on the left.
