In the field of landscape, it was Rembrandt who unquestionably captured with the greatest genius the highly particular essence of the Dutch countryside.

This is one of the finest variations produced by the artist of his favourite motif, a hamlet nestling amid greenery. By leaving the foreground empty, the engraver has placed the emphasis - with consummate mastery - on the primary motif, a country residence with a turret.

The shadows lengthening at the foot of the trees and slopes, and the clouds streaking across the sky, indicate the time of day when the sun is sinking on the horizon and the dark of night will gradually overtake the entire landscape.
